Y Combinator Called It. Services Companies Are Becoming Product Companies

Y Combinator predicted that AI would turn services firms into software-margin businesses. After 14 years in B2B sales and marketing, FullFunnel is launching Current, the first of its agentic products.

Y Combinator Called It. Services Companies Are Becoming Product Companies

In May 2025, Y Combinator put "Full-stack AI companies" at the top of its Summer 2025 Request for Startups. The idea was blunt. You could build an AI agent and sell it to law firms, or you could start your own law firm, staff it with AI agents, and compete with the firms that already exist.

YC has kept pressing the point. In its Spring 2026 request, partner Aaron Epstein wrote that agencies of the future will look more like software companies, with software margins. YC's own post put the economics plainly: instead of selling software that helps customers do the work, you can use the software yourself and sell them the finished product. By Summer 2026, partner Gustaf Alströmer was asking for AI-native companies that don't sell software, they sell the service.

Most of the commentary treats this as a startup opportunity: a founder with a model and a pitch deck walks into a services market and rebuilds it from scratch. There is a second path that gets far less attention. The services firms that already know the work can become the product companies.

That is the path FullFunnel is on.

The Work Came First

FullFunnel has spent 14 years in B2B sales and marketing services. In that time, we have worked with thousands of companies. We have built global sales teams for major technology companies. We have implemented and managed HubSpot and Salesforce instances across the marketplace. We were part of the launch of Clay's partner network as an Elite Studio partner, and we have spent the last several years at the front edge of applied AI in sales and marketing.

None of that is software. All of it is process knowledge: how pipeline actually gets built, where a CRM breaks, what a sales team needs in week one versus month six, and which content moves a buyer versus which content just fills a calendar.

YC's own playbook says this knowledge is the hard part. In a Startup School session on building AI-native services companies, YC Visiting Partner Charlie Warren told founders that automating the process is the product. A startup has to learn the process before it can automate it. A 14-year services firm has already run it thousands of times.

Engineering Stopped Being the Bottleneck

For most of FullFunnel's history, turning expertise into a product meant hiring a software team, funding a long build, and hoping the market still wanted the thing when it shipped. So we did what services firms do. We sold time.

Selling time works, but it scales linearly. Every new client needs more people, and every person caps out at a fixed number of hours.

AI changed the cost of building. The engineering required to turn a proven process into a working product is now within reach of a team that knows the process cold. That is the shift YC keeps describing, and it favors the people closest to the work.

The margin math explains why it matters. Warren noted that traditional services firms top out around 30% margins, and that the bet on AI-native services is that AI moves those businesses closer to software margins in a market two to three times bigger than software. For FullFunnel, the point is simpler: our experience no longer has to be sold by the hour.

Customers Startups Don't Have

There is one more advantage a startup cannot copy. An AI-native startup has to win its first customers before it can test anything. FullFunnel already has them: existing clients who trust us with their go-to-market and live with the same problems we build against.

Every FullFunnel product follows the same path:

  • Find the pain. We identify a problem that shows up across client work again and again.
  • Test it on FullFunnel first. Our own go-to-market is usually the first proving ground, so the product runs on real work before a client sees it.
  • Roll it out to early customers for free. Existing clients get early access at no cost, and their usage shapes the product.
  • Charge once the impact is proven. The paywall comes after the results, not before.

Warren told founders that the pilot is the product for the first handful of customers. Most startups have to go find those pilots. FullFunnel starts with them.

Meet Current

Current is the first FullFunnel agentic product to reach the market. It is FullFunnel's Agentic Content Generation System, and it does one job: turn live market signals into on-brand content that ranks.

Most content programs run on a quarterly plan built from assumptions. The System runs as a continuous loop:

  • Listen. Social and RSS listening, competitor and thought-leader monitoring, plus Google Search Console data, refreshed continuously.
  • Analyze. Conversations get grouped by theme, dominant narratives surface, content gaps get identified, and briefs go to Slack.
  • Create. SEO- and GEO-optimized drafts generate end to end in real buyer language.
  • Measure. Every draft is graded against a 7-dimension quality rubric with anti-AI guardrails, and anything below the bar is held back.

Teams set the format, frequency, and volume. The System drafts to that plan, skips topics that already rank, and delivers drafts for human approval. You can see the full breakdown on the Current product page.

The results so far:

  • 166% increase in content output. Production is now intentionally capped to protect quality.
  • 71% faster time to publish. Turnaround dropped from 7 to 10 days down to 2.
  • Page 2 to Page 1 in 90 days. Average position across target keywords moved onto the first page within three months.
  • 67% lower cost than in-house. Equivalent or better output at a fraction of the cost of a full-time team.
  • 100% free trial to paid conversion to date. Every free trial so far has converted to a paying subscriber.

The System produces more content, faster, at lower cost, the content ranks, and every trial customer so far has chosen to pay for it.

Current did not start as a product idea. It started as the content work FullFunnel has delivered for clients for years, rebuilt so the repeatable parts run on their own and the judgment calls stay with people. It followed the same path as every FullFunnel product: proven on our own content first, then opened to early customers, then priced once the results were clear.

Variance Is the Real Test

YC's warning to AI-native services founders is worth repeating. Warren called variance the existential problem: customers will fire you for inconsistent output faster than they will fire you for being slower or more expensive.

This is where services experience matters most. A services firm survives for 14 years only by delivering consistent work to clients who can leave at any time. That discipline is built into Current: a quality rubric on every draft, guardrails against generic AI output, and a human approval step before anything ships. It is also why Current's 166% output increase is deliberately capped. The System could produce more. We hold volume where quality stays consistent. Speed without consistency is just faster churn.

Selling Outcomes, Not Hours

The old agency model sells capacity. You buy a team's time and hope the output follows.

The model YC describes sells the outcome. Warren put it directly: you have to sell outcomes, not seats or tokens. Current follows that model. Clients choose a content volume and the System delivers it, with the process running continuously instead of waiting on a staffing plan.

This does not replace FullFunnel's Managed Support work. Our teams still run paid media, RevOps, GTM operations, content, and outbound for clients who want experienced people doing the work. Agentic Services is a second line: proprietary systems, delivered as managed programs, built from the same expertise.

The First of Many

Current is the first product. It will not be the last. FullFunnel is designing, building, and testing a lineup of agentic products across the go-to-market motion, including Prism, the reporting agent, and Beacon, the meeting intelligence agent.

Each one follows the same pattern: take a process FullFunnel has run for clients for years, find the parts that repeat, and turn them into a system that runs continuously with people in the loop where judgment matters.

Y Combinator predicted that services companies would become some of the most interesting businesses of the AI era. After 14 years of doing the work, FullFunnel is proving that prediction from the inside.
